Our herbal practice, culture and products are guided by the ecological phenomenon of ecotone patch dynamics. An ecotone is a physical overlap between two separate and defined biomes, where unique species of plants and animals intermingle to achieve a deeper biodiversity, higher sustainability, resilience, and biological equilibrium. The ecotone can be considered a climax community, one of heightened richness because the web of biotic interactions becomes intricate and interdependent. Plant medicine from the ecotone is of higher medicinal value, genetic perfection, physical and metaphysical powers.
Common examples of ecotones are mangrove forests (overlap of marine and terrestrial systems), estuaries (fresh and salt water biomes), grasslands (forest and desert), shorelines (ocean and land), foothills (low land and balsam forest), reef (shallow and deep sea) and many more. Within these specialized and highly diversified ecotones, more reproduction and hybridization in plants and animals is possible, allowing for food and habitat security, increased gene pools, and higher tolerance against pathogens for plant species. The agency of the ecotone is sometimes referred to as ‘the edge effect’ — this is a highly dynamic and resilient co-existence of species — where all individuals are synergistically increasing survival rates with an optimum expression of their genetic capacities.
In our herbal products we follow the profound wisdom of the ecotone — the scientific affirmation that within the liminal region of a threshold, as two horizons collide, a guild of coexistence creates a true climax community. This is the realm where we resolve the problem of duality and in its place, a complete, holistic unity emerges in harmony. Inside the ecotone, healing is not only possible, it is probable because it is balanced, self-correcting, and dynamic. This is at the heart of holistic health.
