The quality of water that is used in the womb of the copper alembic still is crucial, because it births the steam. Our water is gathered using chant, aloha, and reverence.
We grow 100% organic plants and flowers from "Strictly Medicinal Seeds". Our 2 acre garden serves the bees, our hydrosols, and our `ohana. The other botanicals we source from natural occurring ecotones on Kaua`i.
In Hawaiian cosmology there are three nights where full moon energy is most potent for harvest and distillation. Akua, Hoku, and Māhealani. The micro-distillation of 1800ml per session allows for the most potent, expressive, and balanced of products.
While the alembic still was first created 3000 years ago by Maria Prophetessa, an alchemist in Alexandria, Egypt, the finest copper stills made today come from Portugal. We use only Al-Ambiq hand-crafted stills, using methods that have been passed down for millennia.
We fill the belly with mountain water, fill the column with botanical materials prepared in specific ways to maximize release, seal the rims with rye paste, start the cooling system created by hand-fed ice, and light the fire. As the temperature climbs to 100c, the first hydrosol emerges into our sterilized vessel.
While so many seek only to extract single essential oils, we allow the waters and oils to cohabitate. Within two weeks of curing 99% of the oils are reintegrated into the hydrosol. Thus creating a far superior aromatic, therapeutic, and effective botanical spirit. This is how our ancestors made alchemy.
We believe in sharing the whole plant, not edited, isolated or fractionated.
The alchemy of the forest and a copper alembic still is something to behold. Botanical steam-distillation produces hydrosol and essential oil through controlled heat, evaporation, and condensation. Come back soon to join Keya in a rainforest distillation session!
